As summer arrives, many parents think about their kids’ teeth. Is this the right time to see an orthodontist? Do they really need braces? How long will braces take? There are many questions about different phases of orthodontics, conventional braces, and Invisalign Teen. Brush up on braces 101 to help you get ready for what’s next for your child’s smile.
Your Child Might Need Early Orthodontics
Thank goodness for phase one orthodontics. This early intervention begins ideally around age seven or eight and helps open a small palette and shift crowded teeth to make room for adult tooth eruption. This limited phase of orthodontics only lasts about one year and sets your child up to be ready for full braces in the tween or teen years – it can involve an expander, some brackets and wires, and semi-permanent retainers. It’s important to complete phase one treatment while the jaw is still pliable and growing.
Many Patients Have Many Options
If you have a tween or teen who’s ready to get full braces, you may both be happy to learn that there are options when it comes to the type of orthodontia they receive (as long as they qualify).
- Conventional braces. Regular braces made of brackets and wires can work for just about every patient. They’re available as metal braces or clear or ceramic options with rubber bands that blend in or colorfully stand out.
- Invisalign Teen. These clear, slim aligners are discreet and often worn by teens who prefer not to draw attention to their orthodontia. Whether Invisalign is the right choice for your child often depends on their level of responsibility, eagerness for one type of braces or another (they’re motivated to take better care of what they like), and comfort level.
- Angel aligners. This innovative alignment method looks like Invisalign but does the work of clear trays and conventional braces together, managing complex cases that aren’t typically able to enjoy the benefits of Invisalign Teen. Elastics and attachments are both employed in Angel aligners for effective alignment.
Different Ages, Different Stages
Every kid is different and some will lose all their baby teeth early while others may not see their final adult teeth erupt until partway through middle school. It’s good to visit an orthodontist early to get an idea of what’s happening in your child’s mouth now and what direction things seem to be going.
It’s important to remember that braces are not applied purely for cosmetic purposes. Straight, beautiful teeth will enhance your child’s confidence and improve their appearance, but an aligned smile is also healthy. Straight teeth are easier to clean, which means fewer cavities or other dental problems. A corrected bite can also minimize or eliminate teeth grinding problems.
