Orthodontic patients don’t have much control over their journey to smile alignment, but there is one element they can always put their stamp on – color. There are several ways to inject personality into braces, and having aesthetic options makes the treatment easier to weather and gives you the braces you want.
Choose the Color of Your Braces Foundation
Just as some people love to decorate simply in whites and creams, others prefer brushed nickel or stainless steel, both solid and sturdy looks. Clear and ceramic braces and conventional metal brackets all have their own style and the option you select will impact the cosmetics of your smile. Here’s what to know about each of them:
- Metal. This is the traditional look of braces, especially for tweens and teens. What’s great about modern metal brackets and wires is that they are smaller than ever, unobtrusive and far more comfortable. They’re great for patients who need a seriously durable option, especially for those who just can’t stay away from chewy or crunchy foods or play sports.
- Clear. Patients who are not eager for obvious orthodontia often lean toward clear everything. If this is the preference, it’s a good idea to find out if Invisalign or Invisalign Teen is a possibility too, because that treatment is as subtle as you can get. Clear brackets can’t best metal brackets when it comes to durability, but careful, conscientious patients can win in this category.
- Ceramic. Brackets made of ceramic have nearly all the same benefits as clear brackets, including the accompanying clear archwires, except the brackets are tooth-colored and instead of fading into the background they blend in with tooth enamel. Patients who have allergic reactions to metal will find ceramic hardware biocompatible and less likely to cause an allergic reaction while also delivering the braces you want.
Create Your Rainbow of Elastics
There is, truly, no end to the number of color combinations you can create for your braces. Feeling uninspired? Take a cue from one of these categories:
- Monochrome. All one color, all the way across on top and bottom arches. This can include clear or tooth-shaded rubber bands.
- Rainbow. Put some ROY G BIV in your braces to celebrate Pride or just because you love color.
- Ombre. Go from dark to light blue or green to neon, showing your love for a color family.
- Enthusiastic. Love your school or a pro team? Show support with two or three elastic colors.
- Goth. Yep, you can have black, silver, or any gothy color you like to suit a moody style.
The best part of every color choice? Every six to eight weeks, during adjustment appointments, patients select new colors to complement their braces style or stand out from the norm. Changing your braces can help you change how you feel about yourself and your look, and every appointment you get that much closer to a beautifully aligned smile.
