6 Spooky Myths About Orthodontics

myths about orthodontics soleil orthodontics woodinvilleBraces have a bad rap, but they’re not all bad. In fact, they’re very, very good, and most patients realize this fact quickly once they’re wearing their customized braces. Nevertheless, the spooky myths about orthodontics persist, and it’s important to clear them up, especially for the people who are thinking about getting braces or Invisalign.

Myth 1: You’ll Be a Metal Mouth

Those pesky nicknames for braces-wearers have never gone away, but today’s orthodontic patients aren’t automatically branded metal mouths. Some patients qualify for Invisalign treatment – the trays are clear, thin, and nearly impossible to see. Other patients opt for ceramic braces which are tooth-colored and blend into their smiles.

Myth 2: You Will Have Braces for Years

Every patient has different orthodontic needs. Some do require several years of treatment,  but sometimes they will have a years-long gap in between. Others may need only six months to a year of Invisalign if they have minor misalignment. The average wear time for metal braces can be anywhere from a year to three years, but time will vary depending on the patient.

Myth 3: Crooked Teeth Are Just a Cosmetic Issue

There are many individuals who attempt to talk themselves – or their parents – out of the need for orthodontics because they believe their crooked or gapped teeth are just a cosmetic issue. And if they’re find with how their teeth look, why change it? The reality is that while a few funky teeth might give you a smile with character, it’ll also give you teeth that are more likely to develop tooth decay and gum disease. Teeth that aren’t straight are more difficult to clean thoroughly and choosing not to straighten them while you can sets you up for a painful and expensive oral health issues later.

Myth 4: Braces Will Hurt

Modern braces were designed with the patient’s comfort in mind, no matter what kind of orthodontics you get. There will of course be an adjustment period right after you get your braces on, and there will be occasional soreness as your teeth shift into their new positions, but you will not have to suffer excessively for a beautiful, straight smile.

Myth 5: You Can’t Eat Anything You Like Anymore

You won’t be completely limited in the foods you can eat. Orthodontic patients will have to give up some of their favorite foods during treatment – the sticky, chewy, hard stuff can do serious damage to the hardware – but not necessarily everything. While hard candy, popcorn, fruit snacks, and soda are off-limits, you can still dig into a sandwich (ideally one that is cut up first) and enjoy some of your faves. Anyone who wears Invisalign doesn’t have any food restrictions at all – just remove your aligners and eat what you like.
